ESSÊNCIAS
Now available on digital platforms and in all FNAC stores from June 8th.
“Essências” is the title of the fourth Jorge Goes’ record work. This is also his second author’s Edition, an album which presents thirteen original songs and, once again, Jorge Goes’ most eclectic musical side.
The album was produced by the renowned musician and producer Filipe Larsen and coproduced by José Cid and Jorge Goes.
It was recorded in Quinta do Cruzeiro Studios in Mogofores, Primetime studios in Lisbon, and NC studios in Degolados, from 19th of June to 24th of October 2022.
The album features the participation of the magnificent musicians Bruno Chaveiro and Nuno Cirilo on the Portuguese guitar, Miguel Monteiro on the Fado viola, Filipe Larsen on the acoustic bass, Francisco Cardoso on the drums and percussion, Amadeu Magalhães on the string sampling, accordion, cavaquinho, and clarinet.
The poets who wrote for this album are an authentic luxury. We would like to highlight José Cid, Tozé Brito, Mário Rainho, Mário Mata, Manuel Alegre, Carlos Baleia, Daniel Gouveia, Alberto Franco, Soledade Martinho da Costa, José Fernandes Castro and Francisco Rasquilha.
With regards to the musical compositions, there are songs by Jorge Goes, Mário Mata, Tozé Brito, José Cid, and Daniel Gouveia.
There is a bonus track, track 14 “Fado que és Fado”, a Spanish version of the theme “Fado que é Fado”, to promote the album in Spain, because Jorge Goes is from Elvas, in the border with Spain.
The album is based mostly on Fado but combines it with ballads, cante alentejano and traditional music, possibly pleasing a vast audience.
There are two duets, one with José Cid, in the theme “Vinícius e Redol” and another one with Vitorino, in the theme “Compasso Alentejano”, in which also participate singer friends from Redondo, among them, Carlos Salomé.
The album is in its final stage of production, and it will be available for purchase in physical and digital format soon.
FADO NOVO FADO VELHO
This third record work of Jorge Goes is dedicated to Fado and to his own father, João Goes, a Fado lover.
The album was recorded between May and September of 2017, and it was Jorge Goes’ first author’s edition. It was produced by his friend and bass player Carlos Menezes, with the participation of his friends and musicians Domingos Galésio on the guitar, Bruno Chaveiro on the Portuguese guitar, and Carlos Menezes on the bass.
As a singer, Jorge Goes commits himself to his origins as a Fado singer in this project and he defines himself not as a Fadista (a Fado singer) but a singer who sings Fado.
The album is composed of thirteen songs, with two originals by Jorge Goes, a traditional Fado song with new lyrics, a traditional song dedicated to Elvas, six well-known Fado songs and two themes in Spanish, in an Iberian fusion.
The themes that stand out in this album are the original Fado songs and the versions of the themes in Spanish. To be highlighted are also the single with the same name of the album, “Fado novo Fado velho”, original song by Jorge Goes; “Elvas Boémia”, for its traditional nature with the adufe (Portuguese traditional percussion musical instrument) beat, with lyrics by João Ficalho and Jorge Goes and adapted to Portuguese traditional music by Jorge Goes; “O outro Alentejo”, with lyrics by the renowned traditional poet from the Elvas municipality, Francisco Rasquilha, with music by Jorge Goes; “Fado Bastinhas”, with lyrics also by Francisco Rasquilha, adapated to the music of Fado Corrido (a Fado style), magnificently sung by Jorge, which brilliantly portrays the renowned bullfighters family Bastinhas, from Elvas; “Corpo de Vento”, another original theme, adapted from a traditional Fado song, with lyrics by Joaquim Alhinho.
Finally, the themes in Spanish, “Maria la portuguesa” and “Piensa en mi”, which are themes that Jorge Goes has been singing in his concerts for many years, with new musical arrangements and that have paved important ways in Spanish territory in a wide number of concerts in that country as well as in Portugal.
What led Jorge Goes to record this album was, in a way, a will to humour his father with regards to his desire to go back to his Fado origins, where the artist started in 1993; to show that his attitude towards music is what makes him happy, relaxed, eclectic and that he has been evolving as a person and as a singer throughout these years.
TEMPO AO TEMPO
This was the second Jorge Goes’ album, edited by Numérica record label and launched into the physical and digital market in March 2013.
More than just one more album, this was a special project for Jorge Goes, who looked for the best jazz musicians in Portugal to record his original songs in.
André Sarbib was his choice for the production. The album counts with eight original songs by Jorge Goes, two themes by guitarist Claudio Cesar Ribeiro, who provided a precious help in the production, as well as songs by Ivan Lins, Paulo de Carvalho, and André Sarbib.
This is a project that encompasses several music styles from jazz, swing, ballads and Bossa Nova to the beats of fusion jazz.
The original songs recorded here by Jorge Goes convey, mainly, messages of love, friendship, past experiences, humanitarian causes.
We can highlight the special participation of the outstanding musician, the saxophone player, Nanã Sousa Dias, who performs in the theme “Agonia” and who also took the photos for this album. Also worth highlighting was the participation of the Brazilian singer Lilian Ribeiro, wife of Claudio Cesar Ribeiro, who performs in duet with Jorge Goes in the song “Somos Gente”. To wrap up, we can’t forget to mention the fantastic duet with André Sarbib in the theme “Os reis da noite”. Undoubtedly, the participation of these three friends contributed to enriching and embellishing these themes and the whole album, in general.
The musicians who participated in the recording are amazing, at the forefront of the Portuguese jazz scene. André Sarbib, on the piano, Zé Lima on the double bass, João Castro e Cunha on the drums, Cláudio Cesar Ribeiro on the guitar, Mario Santos on the saxophone and brass arrangements, Daniel Santos on the trombone, Gileno Santana, on the trumpet, Arnaldo Fonseca on the accordion and Nanã Sousa Dias on the soprano saxophone. Jorge Goes took on the role of singer songwriter in this album.
CONTRA A CORRENTE
This was the first record work of Jorge Goes, edited in 2001 by Ovação record label. It featured the renowned artist José Cid as its producer along with the participation of musicians such as Massimo Cavalli, João Maurílio, Carlos Viera, Eddie Goltz, amongst other talented ones.
Along with themes composed by José Cid, we can also listen to songs by Sérgio Godinho, José Afonso, among others, as well as traditional music, and Portuguese versions of two standards of jazz, Stormy Weather and Dream a little dream of me.
Listening to “Contra a Corrente,” you will soon realize that this is a unique album in the setting of Portuguese music. Indispensable in the album collection of jazz, pop, funky and mestiçagem lovers.
